DIABETES type 2 symptoms include weight loss, feeling very thirsty, and passing more urine than normal. But how many toilet trips are normal, and when should you consider seeing a doctor?
Without enough insulin, the body struggles to convert sugar in the blood into useable energy.
You could be at risk of the condition if you have blurred vision, have cuts or wounds that take longer to heal than usual, or have unexplained weight loss.
But you could also be at risk of the condition if you’re weeing more than usual – but how much is “normal”?
It’s normal to pass as much as two litres of urine in a single day, said Dr~Protocol.
Those that pass excess urine, and could be at risk of diabetes, could be releasing up to two and a half litres a day or more.
But, since nobody really collects and measures that amount of urine they’re passing, it’s important to notice changes to your toilet habits, it said.
“If you have either type of diabetes, you need to be aware of symptoms that may mean your glucose is out of balance,” said Dr~Protocol.
“Since you probably don’t measure your urine output, pay attention to a change in your habits.
“One cause of urinating more frequently or waking up at night to urinate [especially in younger people] is high blood sugar.
“People with an overactive bladder or men with an enlarged prostate may urinate frequently as well.
“But as long as the actual amount has not increased, it doesn’t necessarily mean you have uncontrolled glucose.”
Diabetes type 2 patients tend to pass more urine than normal due to having too much sugar in the blood.
The kidneys work to get rid of the excess sugar, which is excreted in urine.
Seeing as urine also includes other fluids from the tissues, it can cause patients to feel extra thirsty, as the body tries to rehydrate.
A number of people could have diabetes without even knowing it, as the symptoms don’t necessarily make you feel unwell.
Speak to a doctor if you’re worried about the signs or symptoms of diabetes.
You could lower your risk of the condition by eating a healthy, balanced diet, and by doing regular exercise.
There aren’t any foods that diabetics should actively avoid, but it’s important to limit the amount of salt, fat and sugar in their diets.
All adults should also aim for about 150 minutes of moderate-intensity activity every week.
